Williamson County Corridor Projects

Corridor I-1

Location: US 183 to Ronald Reagan Boulevard

Description: The initial phase of the Planning and ROW Preservation Study has concluded for a forthcoming 1.6-mile roadway spanning from U.S. 183 to Ronald Reagan Boulevard, featuring planned interchanges at each end. The subsequent phase involves crafting preliminary engineering blueprints for forthcoming enhancements. Construction will unfold incrementally in response to developmental demands and upon securing necessary funding.

Status: The engineering firm, Atkins, finalized the study and schematic design of the corridor on May 17, 2024.

Corridor I-2

Location: US 183 to SH 29 and the Burnet County Line to US 183

Description: The Corridor I-2 Planning and Right-of-Way (ROW) Preservation Study assesses travel connections between U.S. 183 and SH 29. The County claims its aim is to bolster safety and mobility in northwest Williamson County while also accommodating anticipated regional growth. Commissioners’ reasoning for the project is that the county has been recognized as the third fastest-growing in Texas over the past decade, with the City of Liberty Hill ranking as the third fastest-growing city in the state.

Status: K Friese + Associates, the engineering firm, is currently engaged in the study and schematic design of the corridor, with completion expected by summer 2024.

Corridor A2

Location: East Williamson County, South of Taylor, between FM 3349 to SH 95

Description: Williamson County is undertaking the Corridor A2 Planning & Right-of-Way (ROW) Preservation Study to prepare for future development and establish the necessary ROW boundaries. The road construction will be phased in response to growth, aiming to enhance safety, mobility, and connectivity in eastern Williamson County, from FM 3349 to SH 95.

Status: The engineering firm LJA identified environmental constraints, collected public feedback, and pinpointed potential alignments. The study team assessed multiple route alternatives and, after engaging with impacted property owners and the Lower Brushy Creek WCID, proposed a final revised route to the Williamson County Commissioners Court, which was approved in May 2024. Construction is expected to start in 2025.

Corridor D (Ronald Reagan Extension)

Location: Ronald Reagan Extension from IH 35 to SH 95 in Precinct 3 and 4.

Description:  Williamson County is carrying out a study to formulate a plan for enhancements along Ronald Reagan Boulevard between IH 35 and SH 95, known as Corridor D. The objective of the study is to establish an east/west connector between IH 35 and SH 95. The County claims that this research is a crucial phase in planning to handle both present and expected future traffic volumes, ensuring dependable transportation as the county expands. Through proactive planning, the County alleges that its aim is to effectively coordinate with property owners, businesses, and the community.

Status: Halff Associates, Inc. designed an alignment for the Ronald Reagan Extension. The schematic has been completed. Currently, there is no funding available for construction. The road will be constructed as growth demands and funds become available. It may take several decades before the entire Ronald Reagan Extension is completed.

Corridor C / SH 29 Bypass Ultimate

Location: Connector from Sam Houston Avenue at Patriot Way to SH 29

Description: The initial phase of the project involves building a two-lane road from Sam Houston Avenue at Patriot Way to SH 29, including a bridge over SH 130.

The County’s plan for this two-lane road aims to meet current travel requirements; however, based on growth projections and traffic models, more capacity will likely be needed in the future. Subsequent phases to complete the road’s ultimate construction will proceed as travel demand increases and funding becomes available, potentially spanning several decades.

Status: Williamson County initiated the Corridor C Study in June 2017 to design a controlled access road from Sam Houston Avenue at Patriot Way to SH 29, aiming to enhance safety and improve mobility. The schematic design was completed in July 2019, following two public open houses in 2017 to solicit community feedback. The design was created by Atkins, and the construction is being handled by Capital Excavation.

A groundbreaking ceremony took place on September 29, 2023, with construction expected to finish by the summer of 2026. Archaeological studies are underway, including laboratory analysis, drafting and final reporting, and curation preparation, expected to conclude by August 2025.

Capital Excavation, the contractor for Williamson County, will enforce a complete roadway closure on CR 106 to rebuild the roadway connection to the proposed Corridor C. Detour signage and message boards will be set up. This closure is scheduled to last for about one month, starting Wednesday, June 5, 2024.

Liberty Hill Bypass

Corridor K

Location: From I-35 at SH 195 to East Wilco Highway

Description: Corridor K, a key component of the Williamson County Long-Range Transportation Plan, has been designated as a vital future east-west connection to sustain safety and mobility amid the county’s rapid growth. This corridor is presently the focus of a planning and Right-of-Way (ROW) preservation study in central Williamson County. The purpose of the study is to identify the optimal alignment and roadway section for this east-west route extending from I-35 to East Wilco Highway.

The study is financed through the County’s Corridor Program. At present, construction funding has not been secured and will need to be established for future phases of the project’s development to proceed.

The County claims that throughout the study, various criteria will be assessed to determine the most suitable route that minimizes both environmental and property impacts. The County and its representatives are engaging with affected property owners and stakeholders to conduct thorough analyses to recommend a preferred alignment for the corridor.

Status: The engineering firm, American StructurePoint, is conducting a study and developing a schematic that is expected to be completed by late 2024. Initially, the Corridor K project was envisioned as a 350-foot right-of-way corridor road project. However, it has since been scaled down to an arterial road with a 150-foot right-of-way. Once construction funding is secured in the future—and if mobility and safety needs justify the construction—a three-lane roadway will initially be constructed. This will include one lane for eastbound traffic, one for westbound traffic, and a centrally dedicated turn lane. As the area develops, a second three-lane roadway will be built, ultimately providing three lanes in each direction.
