A new long‑distance gas line is set to cross Texas. On August 25, 2025, WhiteWater and its partners ONEOK, MPLX and Enbridge announced that their Matterhorn joint venture had reached a final investment decision to build the Eiger Express Pipeline. The project is an approximately 450‑mile-long, 42‑inch-wide natural gas pipeline that will carry growing production from the Permian Basin to the Katy area, west of Houston. To supply the line, the joint venture will connect multiple gathering systems and processing facilities in the Midland Basin and bring gas from the Delaware Basin via the Agua Blanca Pipeline.
While the proposed route is expected to run parallel to the pipeline corridors for the Matterhorn Express Pipeline, additional private land may still be needed to complete the project. Once operating, the Eiger Express will transport up to 2.5 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day. WhiteWater will construct and operate the pipeline, which is slated to begin service in mid‑2028, pending regulatory approvals.
As with other large‑scale pipelines, landowners along the route can expect right‑of‑way agents to offer easement payments. Those who refuse may face eminent domain proceedings. Texas law requires pipeline developers to pay just compensation, but it is important to understand your rights and negotiate terms that protect your property.
Property owner and attorney Dan Gattis can help explain your rights and provide the expertise to prepare you for dealing with the threats to your private property.
Eiger Express Pipeline FAQs
The Eiger Express will span approximately 450 miles from the Waha hub in Pecos County, Texas, to a hub near Katy, west of Houston. It will also interconnect with the planned Traverse Pipeline in Wharton County.
The pipeline’s purpose is to transport growing natural gas production from the Permian Basin to the Texas Gulf Coast, where it can supply liquid natural gas export terminals, power plants and other large consumers.
WhiteWater and its partners reached a final investment decision in August 2025. Construction and regulatory approvals are under way, and the pipeline is expected to enter service in mid‑2028.
The Eiger Express is designed to transport up to 2.5 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day.
The pipeline is 70% owned by the Matterhorn joint venture, which itself is held by WhiteWater (65%), ONEOK (15%), MPLX (10%) and Enbridge (10%). ONEOK and MPLX each hold 15% direct stakes in the Eiger Express, giving them total interests of 25.5% and 22%, respectively. WhiteWater will construct and operate the pipeline.
The pipeline will be built with 42‑inch-wide pipe, similar to other large‑diameter natural gas transmission lines in Texas.
Supply will come from multiple processing plants and gathering systems in the Midland Basin and from the Delaware Basin via the Agua Blanca Pipeline.
The pipeline will end near Katy, Texas, providing access to Gulf Coast markets and export facilities.
